Fire District No. 2 Sponsors CERT Training

Fire District No. 2 in conjunction with Douglas County, is sponsoring a Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) course in Sutherlin. CERT training is designed to provide citizens with the necessary skills they would need in time of disaster. Topics covered include: Disaster preparedness, fire safety and fire extinguisher use, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism, medical operations and first aid, and a simulated disaster exercise.

As residents view the disasters occurring in the Midwest and Japan, it’s important to understand disasters can happen anywhere. Locally, disasters are likely going to be weather events like flooding, wind storms, or snow or ice storms. Earthquakes, tsunami’s, or large fires also are risks County residents are likely to face. CERT training will help citizens be prepared for any of these events.

Although not required, some course participants may decide they want to join a local CERT team and volunteer to help their community in times of emergencies. Douglas County Fire District No. 2 is forming a team to assist the agency during local emergency events. Fire District No. 2 Battalion Chief Roger Johnson said, “We are hoping to have a team of 10-12 people that are willing to volunteer and help the communities we serve”.

Course dates: May 21, June 4, 11, and 18. Classes start at 8:30 A.M. and are being held at the Sutherlin Middle School activity center. The final class and mock disaster will be held at the Fire District No. 2 station in Sutherlin.

Structure Fire Damages Roseburg Home

img_7297Douglas County Fire District No. 2 firefighters battled an early morning structure fire at 1392 Newton Creek Rd. early Saturday morning.  Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 1:38 A.M. First arriving firefighters from the Winchester fire station found the home to be heavily involved with fire on the back-side of the home. The fire was spreading to an adjoining fence and the extreme heat was damaging the neighbor’s house. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent fire spread to the adjacent home.

The 1260 square foot home suffered severe fire and smoke damage as a result of the fire.  The home owners (Chris and Cynthia Van Allen) were not home at the time of the fire.  Douglas County Assessor’s Office records indicate the home is valued at $68,000.00.  No damage estimate is available at this time.  The adjacent home located at 1352 Newton Creek Rd. suffered heat damage that melted exterior blinds and cracked several glass windows.

Fire Marshal Josep Pedrola and the Douglas County Fire District No. 2 fire investigation team were back at the home Saturday morning looking for the cause of the fire.  At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined.

13 firefighters with Douglas County Fire District No. 2 responded with four fire engines, along with a Battalion Chief from the City of Roseburg.  Pacific Power and Light and Avista Utilities responded to the scene to disconnect the utilities to the home.

Chief Hansen Retires

chief_hansenAt its April 19th meeting, Douglas County Fire District No.2’s Board of Directors accepted Fire Chief Michael Hansen’s resignation in line with his desire to retire. The Board then appointed Deputy Chief Greg Marlar as the District’s Interim Fire Chief.

The interim appointment of Deputy Chief Marlar ensures continuity of leadership and the District’s future success, while allowing the Board the necessary time to prepare a succession plan to permanently fill the Fire Chief’s position. Chief Hansen has agreed to work with staff and the Board as needed to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.

Chief Hansen joined the District on 1990 with the rank of Battalion Chief and was appointed the District’s Fire Chief on 1999. During his tenure as Chief the District experienced significant growth as an organization with the purchase of WEST Ambulance assets, when its owner and joint partner in Med-Com retired, and with the contractual agreement to provide fire and ambulance services to the City of Sutherlin. Chief Hansen’s vision, leadership, constant philosophy of quality customer service and his ability to work with others for the benefit of the District’s stakeholders and employees will be certainly missed.

chief_marlarSince he joined the District in July of 2004, Chief Marlar has been responsible for the oversight of emergency services delivery, and for the implementation and management of several of the District support programs. These programs include human resources, governmental affairs, employee training, professional development, and logistics. The District’s Board Chairman, Dan Yoder, states that “the Board appreciates Chief Marlar’s willingness to fill this critical position and the Board has the utmost confidence in his experience and leadership ability. Greg is a dedicated professional who is committed to the success of our organization in meeting the needs of our community and stakeholders.”

Chief Marlar will lead Douglas County Fire District No.2 and management of its day-to-day operations until such time as the Board selects a permanent replacement.
